Hello all, new to board. Back pain all year, just diagnosed with lumber spondylosis. My doctor says I do not have spondylitis, just spondylosis. I tried looking up spondylosis, and it just says one of a number of degenerative diseases of the spine. He also told me to research facelogenic pain. That's the extent of his explanations, he is always so rushed!!!! So I am in the process of trying to find out what is happening. Lots of inflammation up spine, lower back, nerve pain, leg pain, I just feel terrible, like I have the flu all the time, and I tried walking today and was really out of breath (first time). I just feel like crap (technical term). Whats going on? Thanks!

Spondylosis is osteoarthritis and spondylitis is inflammatory arthritis with fusing disease. If you google the two words together, you'll see a couple details explanations.

Perhaps you need to see another doctor? If you see a rheumatologist the first visit is usually pretty extensive. Be sure to take your x-rays etc. Have you had an MRi?

Becareful with that out of breath stuff, even if it isn't related, it sounds serious.

Sorry, I am not more help.

Anna

Hi, and welcome! Oh I just hate it when doctors don't bother to take the time to explain thing to their patients. Just doesn't seem right. It is their job to inform you of you condition - not send you off to do a research project! I had a doctor like that, not any more - I found one that spends time with me and doesn't overload her schedule to the point that the door is revolving...what a difference!

I wish that I could help you out with your questions, but I'm still in the process of trying to figure things out myself. I'm sure others will reply to your post who can help point you in the right direction. Hope tomorrow finds you feeling better...

Adding to what Anna said, osteoarthritis is degenerative arthritis as opposed to inflammatory arthritis like AS or RA.

A good way to distinguish: degenerative arthritis is painful when you use the affected body part/joint. This is because cartilage has worn away and/or bone spurs have formed, both of which cause pain when bones rub together. By contrast, inflammatory arthritis typically feels worst at rest.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm seeing a spine specialist, not a rheumatologist, that's the next step. My doctor keeps wanting to give me an epidural. I can't believe how bad I feel, like I have inflammation all over my body! I did have an MRI, it shows the spine all inflamed. I wonder if I was diagnosed correctly, as I feel worse when I lay down and in the morning. My back and legs hurt even when I'm just sitting. I even felt a flare of pain going up my spine a few times. I printed info out on both. Percocet, hot baths, and massage help a little. I start PT next week, then maybe Enbril. I didn't feel so out of breath and felt better after Percocet. I would really like to get rid of the pain instead of just masking it, but I'll take whatever I can get!

Spondylosis in small doses, cannot "delight us" like Spondylitis.

Both affect the spine to a degree,
Spondy one and two, you see,
"Losis" is from wear and tear,
"Litis" inflames from a flare.
Which is which and who is who,
Spondy one and Spondy too.
One comes to stay when you are young,
The other after your flings are flung.
Who is which, and which is who,
Spondy one and Spondy too.

Thanks Spencer. That just about sums it up. Did you write that? If so, you are really talented.

With gratitude for Spenser's healing wit:

"ANKYLOSINGSPONDYLITISVERSUSSPONDYLOSIS"

(Sung to the melody of a well-known Mary Poppins song):

Ankylosing Spondylitis versus Spondylosis?
Even rheumatologists confuse the diagnosis!
When they file the insurance you'll have become... "Stenosis"
(You're really feeling awful(ly) sick but somehow no one knows it...)

Ankylosing Spondylitis versus Spondylosis--
Call me a pain specialist before I scream the most-est !!!
Can I get a prescription for Morphine not hypnosis!?
The sleeping pills do help me out, but how about Percocets?

I quit my job in industry
When I was forty-two...
Just get me disability
Or tell me what to do!
I'm frozen now all stiff in bed
It's nothing that I chose--
I thought I'd write a painful tune--
And this is how it goes:

Ankylosing Spondylitis versus Spondylosis--
I'm praying for the SAA and certainly God knows it.
Just help me find a parking space 'cause I forgot my cane--
Why won't my doctor recognize I'm handicapped with pain!

Ankylosing Spondylitis versus Spondylosis?
Aching sacro-illial -- who could believe I chose this?
Why DO my wrists and elbows hurt if it is "Spondylitis"?
Achilles tendons burning me and plantar fasciitis??

Ankylosing Spondylosis... OOPS, it's SPONDYLITIS--
Inflammation every day and constant uveitis!
Vertebrae and foramen are fusing into one bone!
Mornings are the worst for me—just get me Hydrocodone!

My doctor told me I don't have "B-27 genes"
But sed rate's high and CRP has broken the machines...
I'm thinking he's incompetent for feeding me this crock--
I must be really overdue to play some whack-a-doc!

Um, diddle diddlee, um whack a doc,
Um, diddle diddlee, um whack a doc

Enbrel, NSAIDs, Remicade or maybe low-starch diet?
If I get real desperate I might just have to try it...
Bending down to tie my shoes is really quite a chore!
Flare ups leave me set on fire and pliant as a door...

Ankylosing Spondylitis versus Spondylosis?
Even rheumatologists confuse the diagnosis!
When they file the insurance you'll have become... "Stenosis"
(You're really feeling awfully sick but somehow no one knows it...)

(Repeat ad nauseum. Then take stomach medicine)

ALTERNATE LYRICS (line 4, only for those at pain level 6 or above):

"You're really feeling awful(ly) sick but D@^^#! no one will notice!"

Hey Mark, love the lyrics. You guys are so talented. Wish a few rheumatoligists could hear it. The Mary Poppins tune fit the lyrics perfectly.
