I am so mad. I am fuming Mad...I have to vent. I can only wear elastic at the moment. Why? Because I went to an idiot Rhuemy that put me on Prednisone for four months. I gained 40 pounds. Thats right. Last July I weighed 125. How much do I weigh now? 165. That was even hard to type. I look horrible. Every time I eat I want to throw up. I hurt to bad to exercise...I barely eat anything..and I have been off of the pred since jan. So how the Hell do I get rid of this nasty fat>? I hate men doctors. They dont get it. Now I am fat, ugly, and I cant lose the weight. Help me ladies...I feel hopeless. I need a miracle.

OH, I sympathise! I've got elastic waisted pants on and I'm not even on prednisone or anything else that should make me put on weight, only naprosyn, and I wish losing weight was as easy as putting it on! Naprosyn does not give me an upset stomach or suppress my appetite at all. My thyroid function is within the normal range. I've been dieting and exercising for several weeks and only managed to maintain my weight. Maybe it's just age and hormones in my case? I just bought myself a magnet I'm going to stick on the fridge 'Food has replaced sex in my life. Now I can't even get into my own pants.'

I have the same problem with weight - only I didn't start out thin either. I was healthy when I got my AS diagnosis, now I just eat and don't exercise and take prednisone at least once a month - which helps sooo much. I have gained about 60lbs in four years! I was just telling my husband that this is it - I am not buying the next size up again - I WON'T!!! I am trying valiantly right now to lose enough to get this size to fit comfortably again - and then just not gain anymore. Let me know if you find something that works for you - I will do the same!

Kelly, did you just have a cortesone shot? Its the same thing as pred and adds on pounds too. I had it too. Its bad enough all the other stuff, you gain weight too.
When I got off pred, the weight started dropping off after a month or two. I lost 22 pounds in 6 weeks doing nothing different. So it could be other meds that you are still on. Having fatique makes you gain weight since you aren't as active.
For me, I feel better if I keep active which might have helped me lose it once I was off.
Pred is an important bridge drug until the other medications works. It is much better for you than say, Opiods so don't blame the doctor for being a man. unfortunately, I had to get back on it last month and I know all the side effects and I agreed to it. Pred is better than being bed ridden.
Sorry, it sucks. Anna

Kelly,
I too share your pain and frustration with the weight gain! I went on a diet last year and it took me six months to lose 20 pounds. Then had a flare, was put on prednisone for 4 weeks and gained every pound back + a few! I just gave up!
I didn't weigh this much when I delivered either of my girls. As if AS were not depressing enough, the fact that we gain weight because of fatigue and pain and meds just adds insult to injury!

aslee9 it makes me want to boohoo....my hubby put on a pair of jeans today...he buttoned them but they were tight....he looked down and to my horror they were MINE! He FIT IN MY JEANS. Yes, they were a little tight, but this is unacceptable. So the first step I am taking is little and I want to know who is with me...the more people with me the better I will be at sticking to it...are you ready girls.... ONLY WATER TO DRINK. TWO EXCEPTIONS: FAT FREE MILK ICE TEA W/SUGAR SUBSTITUTE What do you girls think? I think if we made this slight diet change we would cut out quite a lot of calories...I personally cant live without ice tea, but I drink it with sweet n low, so it is sugar free and fat free, so no gaining weight there. Oh, and I don't drink milk. We could each add a new rule on each week that we all agree on....tell me what you ladies think...lets loose some LBS!

I drink hot tea rather than ice tea, but I haven't had sugar in it for as long as I can remember (at least 20 yrs). I don't like artifical sweeteners as they leave a strange taste in my mouth, so I avoid all kinds of soda, pop etc. Make sure you read the labels carefully on products e.g. I like eating yoghurt and many have "low fat" or something similar prominently on the label, but read the fine print and the sugar content can vary from 5g per 100g to around 16g per 100g.
I have been doing around 45 minutes in the hydrotherapy pool every Saturday and Sunday - things a getting firmer but haven't lost any weight yet.

I already only drink water. Well, ok, very occasionally I order a coke and so will count them to see if I am fooling myself. Our water is very tasty too, which helps. Good luck,
Anna

I already only drink low-fat milk and water. I do occasionally have a diet soda, but not that often. I am up for anything though.
