I stopped exercising a long time ago, and I have gained 45 pounds as a result. (I also use food as a coping mechanism, so that doesn't help.)

Does anyone have an exercise routine they like? Has anyone found a personal trainer that understands spondy? There is very little I can do now because of my foot pain and shoulder tendinitis, but the extra weight is making my joints hurt more, and I am very weak due to muscle wasting from inactivity.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. \:\)

If you can afford a trainer and find one that is very experienced, ours is trained with a pt educational background. She is the one who was able to work with my daughter and find alternative poses for exercises that might bother her.

Our favorite modo is one day at a time. She is very adaptive. Our prior trainer did not have a pt background and kept trying to strengthen my daughter's back, but caused only more problems.

I have to say though the trainer is the best thing we did!

A PT is good they work more at strenthening the small muscles underneath before just working the large muscles on top. And they helped me with what to use and how at the gym. tho i dont have membership now. \:\(

When I was seeking a diagnosis, I decided it was time to take control where I could and hired a trainer. I explained my medical history and my current condition (with no diagnosis) and was immediately put with the most senior trainer at the gym. She worked with me for about a year while I was struggling to get a diagnosis then make sense of the AS. She modified everything we did to protect joints and strengthen all the supporting muscles. It was the best thing I have done in my overall treatment. She also did go online and research AS and talk to other trainers and PTs about what NOT to do with a client who has AS. I lost 25 pounds and built a lot of muscle(which brought me back to a healthy weight).

My routine was to do cardio on my own and strength training with her so she could teach me how to modify everything and protect my spine, hips/SI, and knees. I trained with her twice a week and did cardio (elliptical, running, bike) 4 times a week for an hour. I cleaned up my diet, too. I eat tons of fruits and vegetables, mostly organic, minimal meat, and keep my portions small.

I went into things with the goal of being healthy--for me that was a better motivator than weight loss or muscle gain. I could stay motivated for overall health and less pain as a result.

Good luck,
Laura

If you're lucky enough to have access to any type of aqua therapy, I strongly recommend it. My local YMCA just opened what they call a healthy living center which is essentially a workout facility with a lot of exercise programs and physical therapy all in one building. I've been working with a physical therapist who has helped me regain a lot of strength back in my legs after not working out much at all over the past 2 years. I lost 30lb of muscle over those years and the exercises in the pool have finally helped me start recovering some of my leg strength. For those last 2 years I've suffered from an undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis in my knees which may or may not be from AS. The low impact workouts help me get my heart rate up without causing flare ups.

I tried aquatics therapy through the arthritis foundation, and didn't have a positive experience with it. Evidently, the water allowed me to move further than I could while on land, resulting in my SI joints getting EXTREMELY sore, to the point where I could barely walk. The range of motion in water was just too great for my joints. So if you do aquatics, take it very slowly to begin with.

Most exercises are great for AS. As times I can only last 10 minutes on the elliptical--then I go back later in the day and do some more.

Pilates is wonderful--probably my favorite, with the proper instuctor and making whatever modifications you have too-- to accommadate your situation, fusing etc. Besides gaining core strength (which helps with posture), my hamstrings are much more flexible.

Exercise is part of AS management that you actually have control over. That is very empowering.

Knowing that each day of AS is unique, I started with a personal trainer last year this time. I have lost 35 lbs with diet (Atkins and Mediterranean). I am stronger and healthier. We do strength training legs, core and upper body. I train 2 to 3 times per week for one hour each time. It is pricey but worth it. They have a hot tub there also in the club. The trainer is also the fitness director. He is caring and flexible with me. We stop if it hurts and he pushes when it does not. My wrists have always been a real issue with me so he has me hold a bar weight behind my back and curl my wrists upward. this helps by maintaining function as well. sometimes it hurts to much to do it and we do other exercises It has been the best $$ I have spent. I feel and look better.

CrossFit. find you local affiliate (www.crossfit.com and go. I have worked with several trainers over the past 2 years. Just need to tell them about issues, and they will accomodate you. I am always able to scale and or replace exercises that are uncomfortable. Rowing is great for AS as a replacement for running and every CrossFit gym has rowers. Workouts are short and intense- give you waht you need without long pounding on joints. I could not recommend it more.
