I enjoyed Stephen Donaldson's "The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant", especially for one of the poems "To Say Farewell". It's rather sad, but quite moving. I'm quoting it below:

"My heart has rooms that sigh with dust
And ashes in the hearth.
They must be cleaned and blown away
By daylight's breath.
But I cannot essay the task,
For even dust to me is dear;
For dust and ashes still recall,
My love was here.

"I know not how to say Farewell,
When Farewell is the word
That stays alone for me to say
Or will be heard.
But I cannot speak out that word
Or ever let my loved one go
How can I bear it that these rooms
Are empty so?

"I sit among the dust and hope
That dust will cover me.
I stir the ashes in the hearth,
Though cold they be.
I cannot bear to close the door,
To seal my loneliness away
While dust and ashes yet remain
Of my love's day."

I've read the Uglies and Specials and I can't remember what the 3rd book was called. I liked the series! (my son gets me to read what he's reading so we can discuss it! lol!) I didn't like the 3rd book really at all - but the first 2 were good. The Hunger Games (and Catching Fire) are excellent as well! I read Twilight and at the time - LOVED the series (well, I didn't like the 4th book breaking dawn at all). Now, eh - I've gotten past the fad! LOL!

My alltime fave author is Jodi Picoult. I've read I think *all* of her books (well, except 1 - songs of the humpback whale, I just can't get into that one!). Loved most of them!

I love finding new books to read - I'm going to check out some that were mentioned here!

Melaniej, I dont know how old your son is but he sounds as if he likes the same books as my 13 year old daughter. There are 4 of those books-Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extra's so there is another one for him to read....Has he read Gone and Hunger yet by Grant? His 3rd book of the series called Lies is due in May. There are suppose to be 5 books in all when finished. She really liked them. Maybe a Christmas gift???

I don't know about Gone and Hunger - I'll ask him. He's almost 16. The Uglies series - we read about 2 years ago, so it fits age wise. He is currently liking Generation Dead (waiting on the 3rd book), and hunger games series. Not sure what else. He likes to write himself though and is currently working on 2 books. He's quite good! If he could just hurry up - we could try to get something published and then be living high off the hog! ROFL! (kidding - but he IS good!)

I am impressed with all the kids who enjoy reading in their free time. Good job moms and dads..that is one of my parenting goals!!! Keep our kids reading!

Good point Kelly.

I should warn people that, excellent though the Sword of Truth series of books are (the series I started this thread about), they aren't really suitable for children younger than say 15. There is quite a lot of violence and some sexual themes and themes of torture throughout the books and therefore be very wary about letting children read them.

Warm Regards
Oliver

I just read a book called Hush, Hush by Fitzpatrick ( can't remember the first name, thanks AS) it is about fallen angels. It's similar type of reading as the Twlight sagas but I personally think it was way better. There was more stuff going on.

I'm a big fan of murder mysteries and have been reading the "Richard Jury" series by Martha Grimes. Handsome Scotland Yard detective with a rich and elegant sidekick and a group of witty friends.

I have started read the Sookie Stackhouse novels because I watch the show on HBO "True Blood" and like it. The books are a nice quick read. It's adult vampire stories not the tween stuff in Twilight.
