Diagnosed at 40 on basis of bone scan showing sacroilleitis. Since called undiff spondy. Also diagnosed with fibromyalgia - like most women with AS?! Have had achilles tendonitis, severe pain in jaw and hip, needing steroid jabs, plantar fasciitis. Currently struggling with constant abdo pain and loose stools, diagnosed by 1 Dr as Crohns, then diagnosis removed, no help for 2 years, makes working full-time extremely difficult. I am main wage earner, but patronised by male doctors at almost every visit.

I have had pain since 17 yo but was not diagnosed until I was 34-35. Had a really bad flare after a hysterectomy, quieted down then I hit fifty and it really beat up my body. I have not been the same since. It is my back, my knees, hands, feet elbows, eyes. Something all the time is acting up.

SI jts, cervical and thoracic more than lumbar spine, planter fasciitis for 9 years, TMJ problems for 25 years, shoulders, sternum, wrists, peri-patella, ankles, since hip surgery. HLA B27 positive

There seems to be a commonality of flares or diagnosis post partum. I was diagnosed at 39 after prompting from my eye dr. due to many bouts of iritis. I began symptoms at 33 just before my fifth child was born. I wrote it off as pregnancy pain. After she was born I brought it up to dr and they said I had to get weight under control. I was about 20 lbs over "ideal". I began to think it was all in my head and was beginning to get very frustrated. Finally realized I needed to listen to my body and then I knew I had to be persistent with my dr. Tested HLA B27 positive. First rheumy said I wouldn't be able to do all the stuff I do because the pain would be so excruciating if I had AS. It took me 8 mos to get enough courage up to get a second opinion. The first rheumy had never x-rayed my hips and was then diagnosed

I was 33 when I was diagnosed with AS. I have had symptoms that no one put together since about 9. It started with my ankles, moved to my knees, hips, and then my back. I would never had thought to go into a doctor for my back or joint issues in general after years of being told it was "just inflammation" and that there was nothing to be done. I had my knee operated on to fix it from locking on me but the ortho thought it was just structural.
I only got diagnosed because it was affecting my ovaries, spleen, and lungs and no one could figure out what was going on....thought it was cancer and finally did a CT scan to find it was AS. My symptoms definitely have gotten worse after pregnancies - all the organ inflammation was following the birth of my daughter. My mom always had joint pain, hypertension, swelling in joints for unknown reasons. She died from cardiac complications and was never diagnosed, but she was never taken seriously for any of her symptoms.

Hi! I was officiallly diagnosed when I was 37 (I am 45 now), but I had had milder symptoms from my late 20's to early 30's. I had the back and neck pain earlier on, but I was diagnosed in 2000 with "Undifferentiated Spondylitis." A couple years later I was diagnosed with AS, due to changes in my SI joints. I am not fused anywhere, but I have chronic inflammation in my SI joints, lumbar facet joints, with other involvement in my neck, knees and occasionally, my hands. I am currently on Remicade, methotrexate, Voltaren, Ultram. I also receive cortisone injections and nerve burning (RFA) in my lumbar area. I have 4 kids, and have remained pretty active with these treatments. I felt great during my pregnancies, but the spondylitis always came back badly after I gave birth. My kids are now, 6, 8, 13 and 15 years old. Take care, Kera4

Ive had pain all my life but always put down to 'just growing pains' at the age of 13 it was official i had AS and have struggled ever since.. last major flare up was last year so i cant really complain. I'm now 37 and think i understand my condition pretty well now..even though its always full of new surprises that i now have learnt to expect as part of A.S.. Good luck.. take care
