Hi to everyone,

I don't post a lot but I do scroll around and get helpful advice. I'm a AS (positive gene) patient and my daughter(negative gene) has Spodylitis since the age 15 but pains since the age of 12.

Now my big concern maybe I just paranoid or a mothers instinct. I have a 12 year old boy who is very active in sports. He does Basketball, Baseball and football. One sport after the other as the season opens for it. He is really good at what he does. But I'm noticing since last years season of baseball he has develop pain in his heel, hip and back. His vitamin D is low and maybe that could be whats causing his pain. I see him and see so much of my pain and my daughters that I think positive and just say its growing pains. He just turned 12 is 5'2 and weighs 114.00 already like kids older than him. He is competing in Basketball in Alaska, Haines. He told me yesterday that after the first game he was having lot's of back pain and this morning continues with it. For know all we can do is ICE, Tylenol alternate with Aleve. But I wonder should I start considering getting him tested? We don't have any specialist in town. But since his doctors have treated his sister they can test and then refer him. I'm open to any advice. Thank you for letting me take this of my chest.

I think testing is a good question. On the one hand you want to know but on the other as an adolescent you don't want to dampen his energy and will. I would talk it over with your doctor and see how he/she would like to handle it. Haines this time of year can be a punishing cold so keeping warm should be a real priority for him. There was a Rheum in Anchorage Michael Armstrong MD but Seattle is probably your best bet.

Good luck. Be positive and take it 1/2 step at a time.
