Hi.

I was diagnosed with AS this past November. I was started on Methotrexate fairly quickly and built gradually up to a 25mg dose by injection. I have struggled with side effects (oral ulcers, flares of joints) that my Rheum reduced the dose about a month ago. I have been experimenting with dose to find the balance between feeling a bit better and too many side effects.

I went for my mothly blood work at the end of last week. Looks like my creatinine levels have doubled and my GFR has dropped by at least 20 points. Looks like my kidneys are taking a beating.

Has anyone else experienced this. This is a low dose so I am surprised. I am on a few other medications including an aromatase inhibitor (to prevent breast cancer recurrence). Ugh! This is getting frustrating. I will stop the Methotrexate for now and get hold of all my doctors this week.

Thank you,

A

MTX can affect your liver, but I haven't read/heard about it bothering your kidneys. Except if you feel nauseated and aren't drinking enough water?

There is a special folic acid Levecoren (sp?), that I took when on high dose MTX that prevented a lot of the side effects. It is a prescription and it is processed differently than OTC folic acid. And you checked all the other meds?

I have terrible issues with kidney stones but my bloodwork has been normal.

There are so many factors that affect blood tests, so you definitely need to discuss with your doctors. I'm on methotrexate and a year or two ago one of my liver function tests came back elevated. But on the next routine test it was back down to normal so my rheumatologist did not take me off the mtx.

Let us know what the doctors say.

Thank you for your replies. I am seeing my Rheumy tomorrow so will know the plan. I think I am going to take a break from the Methotrexate anyways. I find the side effects a bit hard. I suspect he will want to repeat the blood work to see that it is returning to normal.
