I've read all the research on how bad smoking is for AS. I want to quit but am having a lot of difficulty. The only thing that has helped me to quit in the past is chantix but it caused unpleasant side effects so I will not take it again.

I'm wondering about those of you who quit after being diagnosed, how much (if at all) did your symptoms improve? I've seen articles about how much faster the disease progresses, and how there is higher disease activity in smokers but any improvement stories are appreciated! (Basically I'm looking for some motivation!)

thanks !

Dec 2016- Persistent feeling of being "off-balance", no true vertigo but feelings of dizziness.
April 2017- Pain started at first in calves, then back (location random), then knees and ankles. All diagnostic testing tried at this point normal.
Sept 2017- First visit to rheumatologist. HLA-B27+, Grade 2 sclerosis on pelvic x-ray, rheumy diagnosed AS.
Nov 2017- Cervical X-ray narrowing b/t vertebrae
Meds: Indomethacin 50mg BID

Hey! I was a smoker for 27 years when I was diagnosed. I quit shortly thereafter and while I did not notice a ton of difference in my pain, I did manage to quit and not pick up a cigarette ever again. I used electric cigarettes to quit, stepping down my amount of nicotine until I had none, then quitting the e-cigarettes all together. It took 7 months and I was free! Hope this helps and good luck!

I quit the next day after I was diagnosed. It went very well as I had a very strong motivation, which was to get my spam together. As I was very inactive and sedentary and I understood quickly that sports was important when having AS, I was convinced quitting was a good idea. I saw lots of improvements over the next 10months, but of course those are due to several factors: medications, switching to an active style, change of diet, mental spirit.
You should really do it.

I had smoker for 30 years, 15 with AS, until I had a lung collapse. Almost died as the lung pulled away from the ribs as they were fused.
that was what got me to quit. That was 35 years ago. Now I 'm 74 and dealing with a new disease in the lungs.
My advise QUIT. I think the e-cigarettes is a good idea. Eases you off them. I smoke a vape with TNC every so often. But thats another story.

John
AS started when I was 21 with lower back pain. Diagnosed at Mayo when I was 35
Back and neck fully fused at 40.

I quit before I was diagnosed, but I was suffering the symptoms. I did not notice a change (but wasn't looking), EXCEPT my rib pain was better.

After smoking for 25 years, I used hypnosis and nicotine gum. I do not like chewing gum, so it worked really well. A friend who is a gum chewer, had a hard time quitting the nic gum.

Actema IV once a month (with pre loading for allergic reaction), Cymbalta x1 daily, Arava 20mg daily. Diagnosed with AS in 2004, suffered undiagnosed since 1982.
