Next week's New Yorker has an interesting article on chronic pain. Worth a read. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/07/02/the-neuroscience-of-pain

Wow this is a novella, not an article. smile

Super interesting. I have read about 75% of it and will have to finish later but it was a great read.

Finally, caught up and read the hard copy. Interesting for us, if you are having a painful procedure (like Humira injection), counting backwards from 10 will help.

Yes, the brain can be distracted from pain. The flipside of that, of course, is when you think about pain constantly, you will experience more of it. I think that explains the strong correlation between depression/anxiety and pain. There was another article in the New York Times just yesterday about a study that showed that merely educating people about pain neuroscience increased the pain thresholds of study participants and significantly reduced disability. See https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/well/dont-be-afraid-of-pain.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fhealth&action=click&contentCollection=health&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=8&pgtype=sectionfront

Darn, I used up my free NY Times for July. Will look at it in August.
