I was recently diagnosed with spondylitis, although I have had symptoms since I was a teenager. I have been trying yoga, but I'm not sure if there are other exercise options that may be more beneficial. I think yoga helps overall but sometimes it seems to hurt my back even more. It is difficult for me to distinguish between "good pain" that maybe hurts now but will be beneficial overall, and "bad pain" which is actually hurting my back. Any advice?

Yoga works for me, and I have been battling this disease for five years now. Try restorative yoga, thats very gentle and easy on your body. Good luck!

I like yoga as well. If only I did it more.

Listen to your body. If it's too much today, it's too much today. For me, some days my hands are sore, so anything placing my hands on the floor is a potential no go those days. Regarding good vs bad pain, that fine line you'll discover as you go. If it hurts a little the first cycle, hurts more and more with each repetition, liste to that.

sorry for the delayed reply. I love talking yoga. I also love AllieG and ahulett's replies. To me challenge, commitment, discomfort are different than pain. Although discomfort during practice could lead to mechanical pain the next day -particularly on small joints. I don't think you should have any pain from doing yoga, while you are practicing yoga. If you have experience pain in an asana (pose), then back out of that pose. Call or write me if you want to talk yoga and AS. Nameste :-) , Rich

I love yoga, I believe it has helped me a lot with mobility issues etc. There's one thing I have noticed however. Doing prolonged hamstring stretches often leads to pain for me. Sometimes I feel sharp pain going through my hips whenever I come out of that pose. And I noticed it will also cause pain in my SI joint that can last all day. So the pose itself is not painful, but I will feel pain afterwards.


Medication: Arcoxia 60mg as needed
No official dx yet (no visible fusion of SI joints on x-rays)
