Although there is one topic addressing this, the importance of the findings cannot be overstated. This discovery can potentially lead to new tests for diagnosis (and potentially more accurate and earlier diagnosis) as well as new treatments.

Here is a link to our press release, as well as links to previous topics on the forums regarding the study, and online information regarding participation in the study.

Press release:

Spondylitis Association Participates in Study That Uncovers Two Genes Related to Ankylosing Spondylitis

"This is the most significant breakthrough in AS genetic research since HLA-B27 was uncovered 34 years ago and SAA played a significant role in making the study possible," said SAA Associate Executive Director Laurie Savage, who is Co-Principal Investigator for TASC's administrative core.

My concern is in early diagnosis particularly with children, would this allow Ins. Comp. the ability to deny health coverage due to preexisting conditions.

A valid concern, but there is legislation in place to prevent things such as this:

SAA Applauds Senate for Passage of Genetics Testing Non-Discrimination Bill

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act 2005 (GINA) Passes Senate 98-0

As genetic research moves forward, it is necessary to protect people from genetic discrimination.

Dr. Weisman's group is also doing research on Rheumatoid Arthritis. My family has enrolled already. They are looking for people who have RA and relatives who don't. They are looking at bloodwork and environmental factors. Sometimes people have other autoimmune diseases in their family. Just thought I'd share this with you.

Hey, I'm in that study, and my husband is one of the controls!

I was so thrilled to read this press release. What wonderful news. I really think they will find a cure in our lifetime.

Would that help those of us that have had this for over 20 years and is this like other things where they say there is a cure in sight but they will not allow the public to use it for several years!!??? Jean Angel \:\)
