Hi Everyone,

My daughter's school nurse gave me a book today entitled: It's Not Just Growing Pains; A Guide to Childhood Muscle, Bone, and Joint Pain, Rheumatic Diseases, and the Latest Treatments, by Thomas J.A. Lehman, MD. It seems really helpful to the beginner like me.

Do any of you have books or reference material to recommend?

Has anyone tried the exercise/yoga video that is available for purchase on this website?

I'm looking for any and all help!

Marion

I bought that book and read it cover to cover. I think it's helpful looking at all the different autoimmune issues and explaining the meds.

Like any book, my daughter's Rhumy thought it was a little opinionated. But, I still like it for it's explanations.

I know you posted this a while ago, but my 12 year old son was just diagnosed and I am still trying to take in all of the available information. I will try this book-thanks for the suggestion!

I wish this book would've been around when I was a child and suffering from "growing pains." Even when I was little I knew something was wrong. Then after a while the pediatrician diagnosed juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and scared my mother to death. then offered no medical help, just a scary diagosis. At least now I know it was AS the whole time. ; )

It is funny, my daughter complains of her legs and her knee hurting her all the time...on occasions she will wake up crying about her leg hurting her so bad. I need to get this book, thank you for the recommendation. She is 3 btw, I thought it was young for growing pains!

I am in the thread years ago, but I think it is a truly wonderful book to fill parents into the family of diseases.

I really found that book helpful. I e-mailed Dr. Lehman and he personally responded to me. I was going to take my daughter to him...but he costs $500.00 for the initial 1 hour visit and he doesn't take insurance(though you can submit the bill to your own insurance...you need to pay upfront at the appt.) I highly recommend the book though.

If you just want more literature there is always Kahn's book-I think some of the stuff he says is bogus and the overall writing style makes him appear as one of the ultimate authorities on AS-but if you can sift through it there is some good info. Another one potentially worthwhile if you go the TNF route is Arthritis Without Pain: The Miracle of TNF Blockers. A bit on the over-enthusiastic side and written in 2004 it nontheless does have a LOT of quality info. For a different viewpoint The New Arthritis Breakthrough is a decent read, especially now as minocycline has been officially classified as a DMARD.

The perfect and all-encompassing AS book will be written when we find a cure ;\)
