Personally, as a needlephobiac (I'm not sure if that's a legit name for that particular phobia) the 50mg shots are a pain. For those who are using the 50's as I am and cannot endure the pain, I have some personal advise.

1) Don't anticipate, take up the "git' er' done" attitude. The quicker it's done the shorter the pain. I don't mean injecting all of that horrible fluid at once, but don't dilly-dally on getting the needle in.

2) To deal with the pain I personally roll up some tissue paper and stick it in my mouth and clench the fist opposite of the arm I'm getting shot-up in. Clenching the fist helps to distract from the pain going on in the opposite arm.

3) Take it easy, it's a lot less painful if you have the fluid injected slowly. The way I picture it is that the fluid has to push away all that fatty tissue to make room and that's the cause of at least some of the pain.

Oh, and I don't think ""dope, cool, awesome, etc."" are very applicable words for use in a conversation of this context.

Shooting-up,

John Calvin

My son is 12 and was diagnosed about 8 mos. ago w/ undiff. spondylitis. The methotrexate seemed to work at first but now he is in the middle of a flare-up w/ heels, ankles and knees involved. His doctor upped his meth. dosage to the max, but if there are no results she wants to start him on enbrel next visit.

I don't like the idea of embrel, but hate even more the thought of permanent damage to his joints. We did just start an anti-inflammatory diet along with added flax, turmeric (1000 mg. daily) and a probiotic daily. I know there is a lot of controversy about how beneficial diet is but I figure we have nothing to lose by trying. Anyone else have any luck with dietary restrictions (including elimination of the nightshade vegetables)??

Okay I'm new to this site but have many questions. I have a 9 yr old boy who has been in pain for the last 2 years. I've finally got a Rheum Dr. to see us. He has had seen them twice in the last 5 mos. He had a MRI (positive) & many blood test (all neg). Dr. said it was enthesitis (ankylosing spondylitis).

Well the MRI showed fulid on the sacroiliac joint. He is suspose to start Enbrel after school is out in 3 weeks. I've been told that this will help him. There are days that he can bearly walk because of the stiffness.

Please let me know how this will affect him? I have to give him the shot once a week (25mg?)I've never given a shot before and I don't want to hurt him. Any advice?

Thanks

well i'm not a mom but I had to give humira injections to my husband and it freaked me out the first time, as I'm not a nurse-y type. It turns out it really isnt so bad. I recommend sitting at a good angle (not above it) so you can see the needle well. Be careful to not push the needle farther in while pushing the plunger down(can be sticky). I would typically quickly stick it in on a count of 2 (when he wasn't expecting it) and then blow on it while I plunged it slowly to distract him. Since its only subcutaneous, the needle doesnt go in far at all and its more of a strange cold weirdness rather than pain. The fear and build-up are worse than the actual action. Hope that helps.

HI..I am new too you can read my post on the general site..11yr old with JAS. My son is on Humira (40mg every 2wks). I hate giving him the injection, but the Humira pen makes it easy and he agrees that letting it come to room temp makes all the difference.

Good luck, I know it is hard not being able to make all this better right away.

Thanks for all of your support. Has anyone experienced any side effects while on Enbrel? My son is 9 and I'm still not sure if I want to start him on this because of all of the things I've read about the serious side effects.

Has anyone tried any type of supplements that might help?

Thanks again,
Ann

Its been a few weeks since this post has been active, I hope some of you are still reading it.
I have a 15 year old just diagnosed and is starting Embrel, have any of you who were talking about it a few weeks ago started it and have any feed back to offer?
If there any parents reading and can give me feed back how their child responded would be greatly appreciated.
I know every child with As is different but I'm wondering does the medicine ever make you pain free? or just take the edge off to get through a day? My son is a very competetive athlete and really wants to continue to play sports, at least through college. I'm just not sure reading other posts that this will ever be possible.
Thanks,
Laurie

My daughter does not take Enbrel, but takes other meds. It just depends on the kid and the progession of the disease or lack there of if the kid can play sports.

She has played National level tennis, and probably up to this year she has been able to keep up. The sheer physicalness of the higher level is starting to take it's toll. It's demanding on an average body, much less one who has added issues. There are many kids dropping out for acls, shoulder issues etc who have apparently no health issue, so making it through college sports is tough just to start.

With this disease, my recommendation is aim high and take every day at a time. We've been training really hard for a National Open, and doing just great. But, we had a day of real knee tendonitis last week. Never know, but just be flexible.

I was reading all the post here and thought I would affirm that Embrel is different than it used to be. I have been taking Enbrel since 2002. When you had to mix it from scratch it was like heaven to give yourself a shot. I never once felt any stinging or pain. Then they came out with premixed Enbrel with some type of medium in it so you no longer have to mix it. After Enbrel did this is when it became so painful. When I first called Enbrel they said no one else seemed to have this problem.

It hurts so bad that I only give myself the shot when I really feel I have to have it. Someone says the feel like 10 bee stings. If this was the case I might be able to stand it. But the pain is the most horrible I have ever had while taking a shot. I would also say that I have had 5 nerve blocks and they don't even come close to the pain Enbrel gives. So believe your children when they say it hurts. By the way I am a 60 year old man that like the children am brought to tears when I give myself the shots.
