I am going to try Voltaren Gel for the first time. Can anyone here compare it to Aspercreme or other topical treatments? Any tips for application?

Thanks in advance.

I have used it for pain in small joints, e.g., knees and elbows, and found it to be better than over-the-counter creams I've tried. Re application, I just follow the instructions on the box.

I tried Voltaren gel a few times on my wrist several years ago, applying the measured amount four times a day as per the instructions. I was on daily Indomethacin at the time. Every time I tried the Voltaren gel, I would get tinnitus the second day, along with that weird head feeling you get when you take too much NSAID. Even though Voltaren gel is topical and I was nowhere near the maximum daily dose, enough was getting into my bloodstream to interact with the Indomethacin.

I haven't tried it now that I'm no longer on a daily NSAID. (I now take Celebrex as-needed.) I should try it again next time a joint flares up.

I use Voltaren gel a lot. It really helps ease up the pain and usually lasts 4-6 hours. Now that it’s winter, I put the tube in a heating pad to help warm it up before applying.

Had a severe month long flare recently and had hubby apply to entire spine a few times a day. I noticed it helped a lot. On a day to day while not flared I don’t notice much relief from it. I use it over the SI joint twice a day since that area is constantly inflamed. I figure it can’t hurt. I have not experienced side effects from it at that usage. I probably use one full dose a day - half each application. I notice it helps more on neck and fingers if you have pain or stiffness there.

I have used it twice now on my neck with substantial relief of the grinding pain. So far I've found still that Biofreeze lasts longer and I use this at night and wrap my neck with a scarf. For working however the Voltaren gel gave me substantial relief for the whole day of work.

Glad to hear it works for some people. I use it on my puncture wounds after an ablation procedure and it helps for that. But when I tried it for joint or muscle inflammation/pain - it didn't help at all (doesn't seem to absorb beyond my skin).

It didn't do anything for me, but it helped my brother out tremendously. How weird is that? I guess you should try it out and see if it does anything for you. It's really convenient so I hope it helps you.

Ive used it a few times. It's effect is more like an anesthetic to me. it takes the pain from a5 to a 3 and increases mobility from a 2 to a 4. Biofreeze takes the pain from a 5 to a 2 and increases mobility from a 2 to a 5. I willl try it on my hands and toes as well where it may be most effective.

It is most effective on joints and muscles near the body surface, and it is not as effective as oral NSAIDs. I'm using it right now on a pulled/strained rhomboid muscle. It does not make the pain go away, but it lessens it so that it's tolerable.
