I'm a big fan of magnesium for these type of problems. It is much better (in my opinion) than potassium which is what is usually recommended.

The link below recommends proper hydration, calcium, magnesium and potassium.

You might also want to google 'charley horse magnesium' and read a few articles to see what you think.

Hmm, I never knew the connection between L5-S1 damage and Charlie horses. That makes sense though. Ever since my discectomy last year, I have constant Charlie-horse type pain in my right calf. Nothing seems to relieve it.

I've had those for several years (about since I started having back pain). I'm not sure what causes them. The only thing I've really found to help is just to try gentle massage when they wake me up. It also helps to change positions a little bit.

I also have charlie horses and bad leg pain down the back of my legs...doctor says it is from my L4-L5 fusing and pinching nerves.

My legs cramp so bad at night that the next day are sore. Especially when I am up all day on my legs. After I helped cater a wedding this past weekend my legs cramped until I cried from pain.

I am off to the Dr today, so I will run it by her. I do take 50,000 vit D 1 x a week, extra calcium (because hips are thinning) multiple vit 1000 B12,2 mg of Folic acid, limbrel gosh the list goes on but I am going to ask about mag, and potassium.

Ok, so I was told to put a bar of soap under my sheets, (near calfs) and to drink tonic water just before bed! The tonic water has quinine in it. Then the bar of soap I just didn't fully understand. But I am game.....
