My AS did not surface until I had my son. AS was not in my family tree. I had the genetic marker & previously lived a couple of years prior with a fiance' who did have AS.
I've spoken to other women whose AS didn't surface with previous pregnancies when they had girls, then did after having a son.
Anyone else encounter this? And if so, was the boy born with any medical conditions (i.e. ADHD, etc.).
Also, did that son develop AS, & at what age?

Married to a wonderful man 23yrs, w/ a terrific son diagnosed with AS.

Acquired AS 28yrs ago. Severe Fibromyalgia, Migraines, Multiple system involvement: heart, remaining kidney (no nsaid's allowed), spine (+ spinal stenosis), neck, knees (Rcd total Rht knee replacement 7/13, Lft scheduled for 9/13), thyroid, etc... Medically retired from US Military.
Now recently diagnosed w/ Primary Hypogammaglobulemia to boot!

Mine emerged several years after I had a girl. About 2 years earlier, I had a boy.

My son, now nearly 13, was diagnosed with ADD at about 8 (I was diagnosed with it at about 34.)

My daughter, 11, was diagnosed with a much more relevant disease, Crohn's, at age 3, right around the time the issues I now know were my very earliest spondy symptoms, began to start to emerge.

So far neither of them has any sign of having spondylitis.

Jen, 42, happy partner of James and Moma to Evan, 14, & Lucy, 12.5 (Crohn's dx @ age 3; on Remicade since April 2010.) I take piroxicam, Flexeril, & Nucynta ER nightly. 3 anti-TNFs didn't pan out for me.

My PsA arrived at age 17, before I'd even had sex, so definitely no link to babies for me! wink I've certainly heard plenty of women say that pregnancy was their trigger though. My trigger may have been a bout of food poisoning.

Not to mention the fact that you've yet to procreate too! laugh

Pregnancy was my trigger. The inflammatory arthritis in my feet started about 9 months after my son was born.

My son was dyslexic, right-brained and very active. He looked like he was ADHD, but Ritalin made him worse. Looking back, he had really bad allergies and the medication he was given had a decongestant in it. I didn't know and the doctors didn't even say anything about the phenylpropanolamine making him hyper. Years later when I took PPA myself, I finally made the connection.

No AS so far in my adult son.

Brenda, just curious why you feel the pregnancy was the trigger if the arthritis didn't start for 9 months after he was born?

I don't think it has to start immediately after pregnancy to be a factor. I think t takes awhile to develop.

Here is an interesting article below:

Below is another interesting article. Anyone that is interested, google 'autoimmune disease after pregnancy' and do some reading.

Thanks for the links; but I was more curious how you specifically linked the two things. Maybe mine was triggered by pregnancy .... I just never thought about it!
