If we are allowed to discuss, has anyone had pain relief from CBD oil?

I didn't notice a difference, but to be fair, I didn't approach it very systematically. I used drops under the tongue. After talking with Dr. Frankel (he specializes in this) I believe my dosage of CBD was way too low and I probably needed to add some THC. I would be open to trying it again in the future.

I think any spondylitis related topic is completely appropriate to discuss in these forums.

Some resources: SAA has done some articles in Spondylitis Plus on this topic (free download in archives). Also Dr. Overbaugh discussed this briefly in a Patient Education Seminar (free archive of his presentation on the website as well). He also answered this question in the Global Spondylitis Summit earlier this month (members have free access to it on the website).

I'd caution people to be mindful of their privacy and identity disclosures in any public setting.

Cannabis is legal in California. I also had a medical Rx for Cannabis that I let expire.

also, if you type "cannabis" or "marijuana" in the search bar above, I'm 100% certain you will find lots of discussions on this topic.

thanks for raising a great question.

this topic comes in conversation all the time. anecdotally, I've heard people say it didn't help them and also some say it helps with pain, digestion, and reducing inflammation. There are smattering of studies (not many in the USA). Can't wait to do/see some research on this for spondylitis.

Hope that helps.

Kindest,

My wife has AS and did try CBD oil and it didn't seem to make any difference in her pain. There currently isn't any clear cut studies proving that it does.

Yes, massively helps me sleep at night. Folks with experience all say that pure CBD oil doesn't work. You need at least a little THC to activate the CBD. I find that's true as well. I tried 18:1 (CBD:THC) and it did nothing, so tried 8:1 (CBD:THC) and it works great. I can't really function well, so it's only for sleep for me. One caveat: I have pain from other sources (yay) in addition to AS pain, so I can't say exactly what it helps with. But overall, my sleep turns to crap without it (or an alternative when traveling).

I too am interested in this. I've seen some people claim they were able to drop their NSAIDs and biologics in favor of just using cannabis for AS, although I suspect this is a best case scenario. Like others have said, it's also not clear what type of cannabis/CBD/etc. that would be effective so I assume right now it's very trial and error.

Just fyi: CBD oil derived from hemp became "legal" at the federal level in December 2018 when hemp was re-classified as an agricultural commodity, as opposed to a controlled substance. CBD oil derived from cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. At the state level, there is lots of confusion right now over what's legal and what's illegal. CBD oil derived from hemp may still be illegal in many states, even though it's legal at the federal level. So be careful until it all gets sorted out.

Worked as placebo for me for the first time. Expensive yes. I was taking tons of it after with no effects. thc is good stuff to relax you mind body occasionally. Helps to stretch...I remember how pleasurable was to rotate my foot affected by enthesitis....

I hate to say it but I Actually have a website where I attempt to sell it cuz I have not been able to work in months. But if your AS is severe I know for myself anyways it wont do much of anything for you .its pretty expensive in my personal opinion it would be a waste of money.
Not to say it may not work for others or maybe in beginning stages it may work ..
Mine has progressed so far again for myself no Cdb's did not work at all

Indeed, I don't think CBD / cannabis can slow/stop disease progression. For me, it's just helpful to deal with the pain. I can't take NSAIDs anymore, but am not planning to try to get off my biologic. That's what is going to prevent fusion. So the CBD just helps me cope with the pain -- I don't think it even addresses inflammation -- it's purely pain management.
