Okay to donate blood?

Is it okay for people living with AS and any of the spondyloarthritis family of diseases to donate blood? I don't see a reason not to unless there is another issue or medication that prohibits it. thoughts? Thank you.


AS, U C, Iritis, migraines. HLA-B27neg. Yoga (instructor) & spin. No meds at this time. Dx 1989. SAA member/donor since 1993. All my posts are personal opinion/feelings and do not represent the SAA. Help find a cure & support others by donating to the SAA.

I think it's fine as long as you're feeling well. As you note, some medications prevent you from donating, but I don't see any of the medications typically prescribed for inflammatory arthritis (steroids, biologics, NSAIDs) on the list of prohibited medications. When in doubt, disclose your diagnosis and medications to the Red Cross (or whoever you're donating to) and let them make the call.
