I've posted before about my achilles tendonitis and stiff ankle that has been problematic since about March despite my medication, exercises etc. I asked my rheumy about it at my last visit - he had a look at the lump and said it wasn't at the attachment where it would normally be in AS so he thought it was degenerative. I then asked my family doctor, who referred me for an ultrasound scan.

I don't have the report yet, but the technician showed me the blood flow through the middle part of the tendon, so whatever the cause it's not surprising it hurts. But she also said I had "a bit of cellulitis", which was news to me.

Any thoughts on how concerned I should be? I understand that cellulitis (if it is that) should be treated with antibiotics, and I'm on enbrel and methotrexate so any infection should be treated quickly.

Celluitis is a skin infection, so I'm not certain what she was seeing and would thought have been picked up by exam with either your PCP or Rheumie. No not all infections are treated with antibiotics although protocols vary from area to area. Just about everybody has a bit of celluitis, Those bugs live naturally on everybodies bodies and get going from time to time. Your skins job to keep it out of your body, docs hate to interfere with what the body is doing naturally with ABX lest it stop doing it............... Call your doc and ask him. I have heard some amazing things from techs over the years.

Did she really mean cellulitis or did she mean oedema? Think youd need to look at the final report, presumably done by a radiologist

Cauda equina type neurogenic bladder problems. Coeliac disease. Sicca syndrome. Ataxic gait and use crutches. Non-specific gut problems. Current treatment: Low dose naltrexone, low starch diet (Guts shredded by NSAIDs. Previously diclofenac worked well, not eligible for anti-tnfs, hypersensitivity to SSZ). Also short bursts of pred for bad flares

Hi, she just saw and felt it while scanning the achilles. It was a few weeks ago that my doctors had looked at the achilles and the redness all around the heel (and more than an inch above it today) had probably come on since then. I only noticed it was hot last night. It wasn't mentioned in the report - just "severe tendonothapy" of the achilles, and a spur from previous plantar fascitis.

I went to the family doctor today and he said it is cellulitis. I'm also feeling unwell and my glands are up. I'm on antibiotics and off Enbrel and he's drawn a line to show where the redness was when he saw it - if I'm not feeling better and/or the redness doesn't reduce quickly then I have to go back.

Hmm well the redness around the heel is subsiding but this morning I have what looks and feels like a sunburnt cheek (in my face). Its winter here and I spent the weekend with my foot up resting so it can't be sunburn. I talked to the pharmacist who said that flucloxacillin can increase the toxicity of mtx as can the meloxicam I take so it could be that. But also it could be the actual cellulitis appearing elsewhere. So back to doc today
