So guess who broke the top of her humerus! Does anyone know of anything I should watch out for with AS and the meds I take? Are we likely to heal differently?
It's been described on the documentation as an avulsion of the greater tuborosity and it looks like a piece has ripped off the humerus. I tripped over a step in one of the local shops this morning... left arm so I can still work. Same arm that still has tingling from the shingles if that's what it really was. Good news is that the cervical spine xray looks ok as the fall jarred there as well.

It should be a simple wait. This injury happens daily without notice on most school playgrounds (shoulder jam) , of course I realize you aren't a kid anymore :-) The "piece" will dissolve in time. All that being said.............
Depending on the "type" of AS you have. You have a pretty good risk of bone marrow edema (something imo way overlooked as a source of pain with AS) Should things be overly ouchy after 10 - 12 weeks, it may be worth following up on.

Thanks tntlamb. The doctor told me the treatment is six weeks in a sling and medication for pain. It hurts quite alot especially when I move the arm, feels like the muscle is catching on something, no chance of not noticing it. It made a decent noise when I did it. I would have freaked out more if I wasn't already used to a certain amount of AS pain. And naturally my neck is not enjoying the sling as it was already sore . I see an orthopedic surgeon Monday week I assume to check it's starting to heal and I'm doing the right things. Xray looks weird you can see the dent where the piece was and see the piece sticking out.

Just what you don't need. Hope it heals quickly so you don't have to put up with loss of function and pain too long.
Cauda equina type neurogenic bladder problems. Coeliac disease. Sicca syndrome. Ataxic gait and use crutches. Non-specific gut problems. Current treatment: Low dose naltrexone, low starch diet (Guts shredded by NSAIDs. Previously diclofenac worked well, not eligible for anti-tnfs, hypersensitivity to SSZ). Also short bursts of pred for bad flares

Thanks cemc. I guess on the bright side it's taking my mind off the residual numbness and tingling from the shingles lol.

Hi - Just wanted to grumble about the pain and nuisance of my fracture, the sling that is pulling on my neck and my upper back and shoulder discomfort from not being able to do all my normal stretches for my AS that use my shoulders, all of which means little sleep. Unfortunately can only take paracetamol (aka tylenol) for pain relief - had to take a break from the meloxicm as bp has crept up as it does from time to time, am allergic to codeine, the only narcotic I know I can take is morpine and that is seen as too strong...
OK moan over, better get off computer, so slow typing with one hand!
